How long does Unity - Free Unity Pro Editor for Students student access last?

Fine print & gotchas

  • One year at a time. Access is a 1-year Unity Pro subscription that you must renew each year by re-verifying enrollment through SheerID, not open-ended access.
  • Not available in every country. The Student plan isn't offered in Mainland China, Macau, Iran, Syria, Taiwan, or Hong Kong; students there are directed to the free Unity Personal plan.
  • Individual students only. Not for classrooms or computer labs; schools need the separate Unity Education Grant License.
  • Must be 16+ and SheerID-verified, with verification by enrollment documentation rather than email domain.
  • Your total finances must stay under $1M USD in the trailing 12 months, or you must upgrade to a paid license.

Common questions

Do I need a .edu email address to verify?
No, you don't need a school email address. You can use your personal email with your Unity ID. Verification is done through SheerID using your academic enrollment documentation, not email domain.
Can I use Unity Student for commercial projects?
Yes, you can use Unity Student for commercial projects as long as your total finances remain under $1M USD in the last 12 months. If you exceed this threshold, you'll need to upgrade to a paid Pro or Enterprise license.
How long does verification take?
SheerID verification typically takes up to 48 hours. Once approved, you'll receive an email from [email protected] with your license key and instructions for redeeming additional benefits.
Can I use this for a classroom or school computer lab?
No, the Unity Student plan is for individual students on personal devices only. Schools and institutions should apply for the separate Unity Education Grant License for classroom use.
What happens when I graduate?
Your Unity Student license runs one year at a time and is renewable while you remain an enrolled student. After graduation, you'll need to transition to Unity Personal (Unity's free plan for creators under its revenue threshold) or purchase Unity Pro.
Is this different from Unity Personal?
Yes, Unity Student includes the full Pro Editor with additional features like console publishing, expedited support, plus bonuses like the 20% Asset Store discount and free premium assets that aren't included in Unity Personal.
