Does Claude have a student discount?
Anthropic has no individual student discount for Claude. Here is every route a student can use instead, what each one costs and who qualifies.
No. Anthropic doesn't sell Claude Pro or Max at a student price, and there is no student plan you can sign up for yourself. Students still have several ways in, and some cost nothing: university access through Claude for Education, the Free plan, a research lab plan for grad students, and the Claude Campus ambassador program.
Every way to get Claude as a student
- Through your university (Claude for Education). Usually free to you, because the university pays for the plan. For students, faculty and staff at schools with an Education plan. See our Claude for Education page.
- Free plan. $0, open to anyone with an account.
- Claude Pro. $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay $200 for the year up front. Same price for everyone, no student rate.
- Through your research lab (Team plan for scientists). Free standard seats for 12 months. Your principal investigator applies, and you get a seat through the lab.
- Claude Campus. Not a discount: selected student ambassadors get a $3,600 stipend, and Builder Clubs share resources like API credits with their members. See our Claude Campus page.
Is Claude free for students?
The Free plan is free for everyone, students included. It gives you:
- Chat on the web, desktop and mobile apps
- Web search, file creation and running code
- Memory across conversations
- Connections to your apps and tools, plus Artifacts
What it leaves out: Claude Code, Projects, some Claude models and the higher usage limits of Pro. For coursework with a few questions a day, Free is often enough. If you hit the limit every day, check your university's access first, then decide on Pro.
Check if your university has Claude for Education
Claude for Education is bought by universities, not by students. If your school has it, you use Claude through the school's plan with your university login.
How to check:
- Sign in to Claude with your university email. Partner schools usually send you through the university's single sign-on.
- Search your university's IT or library pages for "Claude".
- Ask your IT help desk.
Schools Anthropic names as partners include Northeastern, Syracuse, Dartmouth, the University of Virginia, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of San Francisco, LSE, Champlain College and Northumbria. Our Claude for Education page has the sign-in steps.
Claude Code for students
Claude Code isn't on the Free plan, and it has no student discount. You can get it three ways:
- Claude Pro or Max. Claude Code is included, so Pro is the cheapest subscription that has it.
- Pay as you go. With a Claude Console account you pay API rates for what you use, with no monthly fee.
- Your university. Anthropic lists Claude Code among the Claude for Education features. Check whether your school's plan includes it.
If you study in the US or Canada and want a free coding agent, OpenAI gives students free Codex credits. See our Codex for students page.
Grad students and researchers: the Team plan for scientists
Anthropic's Team plan for scientists is for research groups, not individual students. A principal investigator, or equivalent, at an accredited university or nonprofit research institute applies for the whole lab.
- For the natural sciences, math, computer science and engineering
- 1 to 25 seats per group
- Standard seats are free for 12 months, and premium seats cost $15 a month instead of $100. After that, regular pricing applies
- Includes Claude Code and Claude Science
- Review takes 5 to 7 business days after verification
If you work in a lab, ask your PI to apply. Students can't apply on their own.
Claude Campus and Builder Clubs
Claude Campus replaced the old $50 Student Builder API credits. It's a school-year ambassador program with three tracks: Claude Builder Clubs for undergrads, Claude Campus Conversations for master's students, and Claude Science workshops for PhD students and postdocs.
- Builder Club leaders share resources like API credits with club members
- Every selected ambassador gets a $3,600 cash stipend
- Students in any country can apply if they are 18+ and have work authorization where they study
- Applications for 2026-27 ran September 1-12 and are closed
If your campus already has a Builder Club, joining it is the easiest way to get the shared resources. Our Claude Campus page has the details and the next application window.
